Blog Post 3#: Research Gap

So, in an effort to update my readers, I moved forward in my comparative analysis with the following two websites (a change from my initial thoughts/posting):

1. The Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs:

2. The International Center for Law and Religious Studies:

I changed my second website source for a few reasons, with the primary reason being the original websites were both represented by the same individual, and I wanted diversity of thought and experience.

The second reason for change was because of their comparative likeness: They both are academic research centers (universities), global leaders in international religious freedom or belief (RFOB), and are grounded in law and policy reform.

With that said, using both websites as a common peacemaking ground, the academic literature then took on the comparative text component to fulfill the literature review requirements.

I focused on three subfields of study: The First Amendment, impacts of social media, and legal anthropology. I already know these subtitles may need "massaging" as Dr. Bacabac might say! :)

The research gap that is relevant, especially from a technological-mediated perspective, addresses disenfranchised religious or minority groups: Social media corporations are not held liable for hate speech and subsequent violence due to the law, Section 230, which provides civil immunity to corporations, but at the expense of human rights offenses/atrocities. My study follows a postmodern goal, with a critical theories method.

In order to make my research proposal, I believe I will be analyzing text once again, but perhaps through the perspective of how Section 230 might be reformed. I hope to discuss and have the consultation of Dr. Bacabac as well.

Thank you in advance for your thoughts and comments.

Blessings,

Rachel

  1. Some thoughts:
    1. Are you going to limit your research to Christian religions, or will you include other religions?
    2. Will you be looking at religious persecution in the US only, or worldwide?
    3. I see that you will have a section on the impacts of social media. I think this is an excellent idea. When I am on TikTok, I see a lot of anti-Christian posts. Oftentimes, they link their disbelief to the Republican party, which makes me wonder if we have seen more anti-religious rhetoric in the last seven years than we have before that.
    4. I also wonder what form this religious persecution takes. Is it mostly verbal harassment, or is it mostly physical harassment?
